digital storytelling
Description
Everyone has a story to tell and we’ll teach you an awesome new way to tell it at this series of digital storytelling workshops! Join us at the Council Bluffs Public Library where Teen Services Librarian Anna Hartmann will introduce you to the art of telling a great story and then show you how to use amazing and free online tools to set your story to music, add photos and artwork, and make your story come alive.
Budget
This program was free for library as we used equipment that we already had, including laptops and microphones for recording audio. We used Photo Story 3, which is free software, to produce our stories.
Program Details
This program was a partnership with the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa. Attendees pay $5 to the Girl Scouts to attend this series of workshops. The first year, which is laid out in the plans below, ran in 4-2 hour sessions. Because it was difficult for girls to make it to all 4 weeks with their other summer commitments, our next series during Summer 2013 will run as 2-4 hour workshops during one week on a Tuesday and Wednesday.
Program Outline : This document lays out the plan for all 4 weeks of the initial program.
Week 1 and Week 2 Detailed Outlines Because these weeks included quite a bit of instruction on my part, I laid the weeks out in detail. Weeks 3 and 4 were working weeks for program participants. During Week 1, I also had an introductory power point presentation to start talking to the teens about storytelling.
Other documents that I used throughout the workshop included a Finding Your Story Interview activity. The girls interviewed each other using the questions that matched the type of story they wanted to tell. We also discussed copyright at length and they were given a handout detailing free and legal resources they could use in their stories. And finally, as they were getting ready to do the final recording of their stories, they read them to each other and used the Peer Critique Worksheet to help each other make improvements to their stories.
If you'd like to learn more about Photo Story 3, there are many helpful resources available online, including this tutorial.
