Program Details
Room Setup: 1 table near the door for bowls of frosting, empty bowls, and disposable knives. 2-3 tables across the front of the room for candy buffet. 10 tables (4 chairs each) spread out in the middle area of the room. 1 table on a tarp at the far end of the room to serve as the coloring station. 1 table at the back of the room for the cupcakes. Lower projection screen and hook up laptop to show participants online examples of monster cupcakes.
Logistics: Prior to the program, frosting should be divided into individual size portions. At check-in, participants will receive a bowl of frosting, an empty bowl, and a disposable knife. They should then find a seat.
To introduce the program, show pictures from Makoodle. (This site is where I originally found this idea via Pinterest - it was my first ever Pinterest-inspired program in 2011). Advise teens to think through their designs. They can feel free to look through the examples or come up with their own ideas.
Before anyone is allowed to get up, discuss supplies. Teens may take one of each cupcake (chocolate and vanilla). Trades can be negotiated, but everyone starts with one of each. At the candy buffet, they should take their empty bowl and may take one spoonful of each item on first go through. They are allowed to go through a second time if there is enough and may trade candy amongts themselves. They may of 2-3 each of the Twizzlers and Fruit Slices. At the coloring station, teens should be encouraged to try only a few drops at a time to color their frosting because if you use too much the consistency of the frosting will change and it will be too thin to use. If they would like more than one color, they may ask for an extra bowl to split their frosting.
The front row of the room will start at the candy buffet. The back row will start at the coloring station. When everyone is done, trade. Once teens have been through both stations, they may pick up their cupcakes and start decorating.
Advise teens to clean up after themselves as they go and to please pick up anything that is dropped on the carpet so that it doesn't get ground in. Ask them to let you know when they are finished so that pictures may be taken before the cupcakes are eaten.
Have paper plates available if anyone would like to take their cupcakes home instead of eating them at the program.
