duct tape boats
Description
See if you have what it takes to build your own floating duct tape boat! After you build, we’ll float your boats in the library’s fountain and see whose holds the most weight.
Top winners take home a prize!
Budget
This program was free for the library. We had leftover silver duct tape from a previous project. Other boat parts were collected from our storage closet (cardboard, craft sticks, toilet paper rolls, old fruit containers, etc.). The pool was borrowed from the Youth Department and we used pennies, which we had previously collected for BINGO markers, to test the weight capacity of each boat. The winner was allowed to choose a prize from the prize closet, which includes mostly donated books, gift certificates, etc.
Program Details
Room Setup: We filled a small inflatable pool with water on the tile in Teen Central near our sink. In the carpeted area of the room, we sectioned off an area for participants to build their boats.
Logistics: Teens were given 30 minutes to design their boats using the provided supplies. At the end of 30 minutes, we all moved over to the tile and tested the boats in the water, counting how many pennies each boat could hold.
